about
“Dog Days” was penned on the edge of the pandemic, before any sign of the upheaval to come was known. It quickly became an anthem for me as I navigated isolation, protests, and witnessed the world plunge into a steady chaos. “Change is a’comin’ ahead,” became my motto, because if only one thing is certain, that thing is change.
I am inspired by progress and the requisite deconstruction and rebuilding that facilitates it. I believe that our demons will surface whether or not we ask them to, and I wrote this song not just to witness to my own, but also to witness those of the people who abuse power. The line, “fool me once, won’t fool me twice / pick your poison right,” is my challenge to them; my act, however small, of dissent.
At the end of the day, only I control how I express myself, find joy, and find meaning. “I want to feel so alive” is my own, personal call to heed; a way for me to assert my right and responsibility to life.
lyrics
Change is a’comin’ ahead
Dog days of summer are behind us
How long?
How long?
I wanna feel so alive
I wanna feel so alive
Fool me once, won’t fool me twice
Pick your poison right
Wide eyes to the sky
Toward the next season
How long?
How long?
I wanna feel so alive
I wanna feel so alive
How long?
How long?
Change is a’comin’ ahead
Dog days of summer are behind us
